IOAI aims to inspire young people globally to pursue science, with a focus on AI. We provide a platform for top AI students selected through national competitions to compete, exchange ideas, and build connections, fostering a dialogue on AI’s opportunities and ethical challenges among students and the community.
IOAI aspires to become an International Science Olympiad on par with the established ones in terms of participating countries and task level. In collaboration with global organisations and AI experts, IOAI builds a network of future innovators who will shape AI for the benefit of humankind and our planet, while ensuring financial accessibility for all participants.

Since its official establishment in December 2023, the IOAI has rapidly attracted participation from over 160 countries and regions across six continents—including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada—and continues to expand its global influence.
The inaugural IOAI set new records for a first‑edition international science Olympiad, both in the number of participating countries/regions and in total participants.

The IOAI-NZ is officially responsible for identifying, training, and selecting the New Zealand national team for the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI).
IOAI-NZ leads the nationwide effort to introduce secondary‑school students to cutting‑edge AI concepts, nurture emerging talent, and provide a clear pathway for young New Zealanders to compete on the global stage.
Vineyards AI Lab is the only organisation in New Zealand officially accredited by the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) to operate and oversee the national team selection process.

Team New Zealand secured the Best Demonstration Award in the team challenge, alongside a silver medal and a bronze medal in the individual contests at IOAI 2026 held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Selection for Team NZ at the 2027 International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) will run via a free, multi-stage, merit-based process open to all New Zealand secondary school students.
Registration Window: 1 December 2026 – 31 January 2027

Stage 1

National outreach & Preliminary Selection
Online selection open to all NZ secondary students, including AI problem-solving tasks, basic machine learning concepts, data reasoning, and algorithmic thinking.
National outreach starts from September to end of the November 2026, and then the registration will open from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2027. The first round of selection will take place on 10 April 2027.
Stage 2

National AI Selection Contest
Advanced tasks integrating algorithms, applied AI problems, and analytical reasoning.
Students who advance to Round 2 will have an interview from Mid-April 2027, followed by a qualification contest for Round 3 (camp round) on 15 May 2027.

National AI Training Camp & Final Selection
Centralized camp with lectures, guided problem-solving, and assessments aligned with IOAI syllabus. Final team chosen based on performance and academic integrity.
The top 20 students will enter the National AI Training Camp for training in June 2027, after which the national team (with reserves, if applicable) will be selected to compete in APOAI in June (date TBD), and IOAI 2027 on 4-10 July in Singapore.
